Large, ugly objects are being installed in the French Quarter. They are metal cylinders, almost 9 feet tall and 2 feet wide, topped by a 3 foot metal pole, 12 feet tall in all. They hum menacingly.

Alien beings? Halloween jokes? A call to the Vieux Carre Commission revealed they are cell phone towers. Worse yet, they are legal. Before Katrina, 14 of them were approved by the City Council. I was informed that appropriate public meetings had been held.

Perhaps no one understood they would be so big or that they would not be located out of sight.

Years ago, it was wisely decided that telephone poles would not be allowed in the French Quarter in order to preserve its historic appearance. Now it seems that we are permitting the installation of "outer space" structures.

A friend suggested they be decorated. We could disguise them as tall drinks with a straw sticking out of the top.

Seriously, take a walk on Royal or Chartres streets, and I think you will agree that something must be done to have them removed.
